"Erotica is as different from pornography as love is from rape, as dignity is from humiliation, as partnership is from slavery, as pleasure is from pain...Blatant or subtle, pornography involves no equal power or mutuality. In fact, much of the tension and drama comes from the clear idea that one person is dominating the other...Whatever the gender of the participants, all pornography is an imitation of the male-female, conqueror-victim paradigm, and almost all of it actually portrays or implies enslaved women and master."
-Gloria Steinem
I don't know what bothers me more...
The men simulating rape? Or the music that repeats " Bend over, bend over, bend over." or " In her, in her, in her in her." Then there is a DJ who is screaming the most disgusting encouragements to the men.
There is even one part where one of the female participants is on the ground -skirt up- and she is crawling away(IN A SEEMING DISTRESSED FAHION) and the guy jumps on her and (what looks like) rapes her again. This is absolutely sickening! I feel literally sick.
There is no regard for the choice of the woman. During this dance she ends up being bent over by these men and when she's not being being controlled, there is a distinct "offering" action that is being demonstrated. I probably wouldn't be so angry if the crime rates in Jamaica were low and they were somewhat peaceful, but it's NOT! Actions like these staddle a very, very, very, fine line between recreation and reality. It's only a matter of time...
The view of women, Black women, is skewed and torn across the globe. This constant reduction aids in the overall spike in hate crimes against women in the world. I feel that people write too much off. Everyone is all about fun and "This really isn't bad, it's just club dancing" or "I've never been raped"...
BUT DO YOU HAVE TO BE RAPED?
DO YOU HAVE TO BE HELD DOWN, IN ORDER TO SEE THE PROBLEM IN THIS BEHAVIOR?
DOES IT HAVE TO BE YOU?
Some people say that feminisms work is over...but when "Fuck me, fuck me fuck me, fuck me" booms on the stereos and women (ANYWHERE) are participants in simulated rape...Maybe we should re-think our stance on feminism. We shouldn't let the short comings and corruption of the misinformed ruin us. It's NOT JUST DANCING. IT'S NOT JUST DANCING. IT'S NOT JUST DANCING. IT'S NOT JUST DANCING.
this is dangerous.
